New Advertising Trends - Vector Graphics

When images are made on the internet, they are stored on a grid. Each individual piece of the image is stored as a pixel on the grid. Then, when the image is expanded to make it larger, the image can become pixelated as each individual pixel is enlarged and the image can become grainy. Vector graphics instead stores qualities of the image like the colors, shapes and lines and stores them as a mathematical equation. This way, when an image needs to be enlarged, vector graphics can produce the image by applying that mathematical equation in a larger size. This method produces a consistently clear enlarged image.

Vector graphics have been used for CAD and drafting software which allows the user to have more flexibility when using graphics. One of the first original users of vector graphics was Ivan Sutherland, who used them in the making of the TX-2 to create his computer program called Sketch Pad.

Vector graphics are a good system to use for drawing because as the image is rotated and moved, flipped, or scaled, the original image is not disrupted or changed. Vector graphic editing systems can be used to zoom in to images to see a clearly defined details. Using vector graphics editing software, vector graphics can be moved, and expanded in size. Many acclaimed digital designers and illustrators use vector graphics to produce images which are used in publications, and on television. Illustrators have also used this graphics program to illustrate children's books and movies. Vector graphics are a good system for graphic designers and illustrators to work with because not only can the program be used for illustration, but for printing and advertising purposes as well.

Vector graphics are especially useful for printing and advertising purposes. The clarity of a word or image which is printed on a business card is precise and clear. If the words on that small business card need to be expanded to billboard size, the clarity of the text and images will be maintained and just as readable as they were on the business card. If another type of graphics system is used, the clarity of the words and images would be gritty and blurry when enlarged because of the pixelation.

Vector graphics are the perfect graphic systems to use for printed advertisements which need to be scaled to different sizes while still maintaining their clarity. It is important for large scale advertisements such as billboards to be easy to read from the road as well as eye catching. Because the clarity of the images and text are so clear using vector, they literally pop off of the billboard. There is no need to use bright orange colors to catch someone's eye, a soothing color palette can be used on the billboard because the vector graphics are such a high quality in themselves that a simple design catches the eye. This type of eye catching advertising can be used on smaller scales for signs and banners as well.
